Adhesives and Sealants: Enabling Sustainable Change
Considering the global megatrend that sustainability has become, the adhesive industry had a bit of a head start. After all, natural materials like tree sap were used as the earliest adhesives known to man, and starches have provided renewable options for adhesive formulations in packaging applications for decades. In addition, hot melts have long represented a significant segment of the adhesive industry; as 100% solids materials, they are inherently quite sustainable. The early shift away from solventborne formulations is another significant example.
PFAS: Eliminating the Harmful (and Establishing the Safe) Materials for Critical Applications
Regulatory bodies all over the world are busy discussing PFAS, and—because they are focusing on this topic—they are forcing all producers of PFAS-containing chemical products, as well as manufacturers of articles that incorporate these chemical products, to not only discuss PFAS but to give serious thought to either how to rid their products of PFAS or to why their PFAS-containing products must be protected at all costs.
WEBINAR: Optimizing Supply Chain to Increase the Bottom Line
“Optimizing Supply Chain to Increase the Bottom Line” is the third installment in our four-part webinar series on Operational and Manufacturing Excellence, which we developed in partnership with the American Coatings Association. In this webinar, ChemQuest director Robert Kramer discusses strategies for optimizing in-house vendor management, achieving quality improvement, and improving lead times to customers. Learn about vendor sourcing, logistics, transportation/freight, buyer groups, and more.
Coatings Raw Materials Following the Supply Chain Crisis: Current and Future Outlook
In 2019, no one in the coatings industry expressed any concern about raw material supplies and availability. Then COVID and the global supply chain crisis hit with a one-two punch and disrupted essentially all aspects of daily life on a global scale, not only for the population at large but for both global industries and governments as well. For two solid years, chaos reigned. We are now more than halfway through 2023, and while both the paint and coatings business—and the raw material supply chain upon which it is built—seem to be back to some semblance of “normal,” what we are experiencing in 2023 is not what we were experiencing in 2019. Not by a long shot.
Scouting Material Science Innovation
I recently had several conversations with some extremely experienced technical scouts and investors who told me that the best source of new technology in their years of practice has been the startup community. For the CASE market (paints, coatings, sealants, and...
The State of the U.S. Paint and Coatings Market: More Reliable Supply Chain, Slight Decline in Volume
Although the paint and coatings market recovered in 2021 from a 2020 dip in volume, the real news is the dramatic increase in value that has resulted from the high cost of crude, decreasing (but not completely halted) global supply chain issues, remnant shortages, improved (but not back to pre-2020 levels) transportation/logistics issues, and labor shortages.
