ASTM Tape Adhesion Testing: The Tape Conundrum
Since the 1930s, the most prevalent test for the evaluation of coating adhesion has been the manual tape-and-peel test. Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape (initially 3M™ 710 until it was discontinued in the mid-1930s) is uniformly pressed against a coating. Once the tape is peeled off, the amount of film removed from the substrate observed on the tape or the sample is rated against various photographic or rating standards.
Improving Global Health with Coatings Technology
Specialized paints can provide mechanisms for maintaining hygiene that prevent disease spread, protect water and sanitation systems, reduce the spread of fire, improve indoor air quality, and help to ensure the safety of the food supply chain. Other areas like lead abatement and infrastructure protection only add to the value provided by specialized coatings.
Selecting the Right Outdoor-Durable Powder Coating
Choosing an exterior-durable powder coating can be a daunting task. Some powder pundits assign the descriptor “outdoor durable” on a product without a thorough understanding of what this really means. In practice, it is important to consider the differing levels of exterior durability and which powder chemistries meet which quality specifications.

Breaking the Ice: The Innovative World of Icephobic Coatings
Icephobicity is defined as the ability of a solid surface to repel ice or prevent ice-film formation due to topographical structures at the ice-surface interface. Icephobic coatings are formulated to ensure that ice doesn’t accumulate on or strongly attach to a surface. In fact, fully functional icephobic coatings operate on several different levels. They can have the ability to repel water droplets, delay ice nucleation, and/or reduce ice adhesion.
