Expanding a client’s internal R&D/failure analysis team to include our specialty materials experts ultimately saved them time and money.
The Challenge
A global manufacturer of protective coatings based in North America was experiencing compatibility issues in the field between a primer and various top-coats that yielded pinholes and bubbling soon after spray application.
Results were not reproducible in their lab. Reformulation attempts in their lab over an 18-month period did not yield success, resulting in multiple missed sales opportunities.
Under an NDA executed to protect the confidentiality of the formulation, the company transferred the data package and product to ChemQuest Technology Institute (CQTI) for evaluation.
Review of Formulation and Prior Exercises to Solve Issue
The knowledgeable and experienced scientists in CQTI’s lab went through several key steps to solve the client’s problem:
- Successfully performed simulated field spray application to replicate problem
- Undertook full review of formulation and individual raw materials
- Determined root cause of pinholing/cratering/bubbling
- Carried out theoretical consideration of alternative raw materials
- Reviewed findings with client and provided recommendations for replacement of suspected problem materials
The Results
The client preferred to follow ChemQuest guidance on reformulation rather than to have our team perform the work at CQTI. This was acceptable as an opportunity to prove the value of external assistance while demonstrating cost savings for the client.
Upon the client’s use of the recommended raw material at the suggested dose, initial lab tests were positive. The client then moved to field spray trials, which confirmed successful application using multiple topcoats.
The next step for the client was to resubmit the new formulation for industry standard testing. This additional cost was minimal compared to the sales the client had lost over the previous 18-24 months.
