An asset owner’s trust in ChemQuest Technology Institute to look beyond traditional coatings formulation methods is leading to disruptive technology development.

The Challenge

A leading global oil and gas company with a multitude of tank-carrying assets was dissatisfied with the fulfilment of their request for a longer lasting coating from traditional coating suppliers.

The client approached ChemQuest Technology Institute (CQTI) to design a new two-layer coating system that would last a minimum of 20 years in service, could be applied using traditional methods, would meet stringent regulatory controls, and could be available worldwide. CQTI was allowed to explore and/or create new resin systems in the process.

Unique Design Path

The innovative scientists at CQTI established and initiated a unique six-phase design path, including:

  1. Virtual screening of all known resin systems
  2. Physical screening of all known resins
  3. Physical screening of performance modifiers
  4. Formulation optimization and long-range exposure testing
    • a) Evaluation of topcoat and primer chemistries
    • b) Pre-formulation development to improve barrier and adhesion properties
    • c) External testing of best-performing system with variety of performance modifiers
    • d) Optimization of formula and performance modifiers
  5. Beta testing in field
  6. Commercialization

The Results

Currently in Phase 4d, the project is proceeding according to the timeframe and initial workplan. The collaboration between the client and CQTI has been the main key to the project’s success. All knowledge and test data are shared with the client during regular meetings to discuss progress.

Detailed service environment knowledge is aligned to ensure that the technology performance matches the client’s needs. This is confirmed through testing protocols established along the way and in comparison to current industry benchmarks.
