We first began exploring megatrends impacting the global coatings industry with the topic of urbanization. In this second post in the series, we turn to the concepts of digitalization and Industry 4.0, which are driving faster R&D cycles, smarter manufacturing, and transformative innovation.
Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), laboratory automation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are giving companies a competitive edge across the value chain — from formulation design to production optimization and real-time customer feedback.
Digital Formulation and Automation
AI and big data are accelerating coatings R&D by enabling faster formulation optimization and reducing reliance on traditional trial-and-error approaches. AI-driven platforms like Alchemy Cloud and Albert Invent provide powerful digital infrastructure — including electronic lab notebooks (ELNs), integrated laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and AI-enhanced data analysis — to streamline product development workflows.
Automation tools such as Chemspeed Technologies are transforming lab operations by enabling high-throughput synthesis, formulation, testing, and application. This convergence of automation and AI reduces development timelines and enhances reproducibility.
Companies like Eastman Chemical are leveraging digital modeling and predictive analytics to simulate coating performance under various environmental conditions. This not only accelerates innovation but also reduces material waste and the need for physical testing.
Automated digital testing facilities at AkzoNobel’s UK location feature a purpose‑built digital testing center used to simulate harsh environmental conditions. By digitally replicating variables like humidity, temperature fluctuations, and UV exposure, the facility accelerates product validation and helps fine‑tune formulations. This concept has also been adopted at DIC Corp.’s virtual R&D and simulation labs, which allow for rapid prototyping and testing of new formulations under simulated environmental conditions.
More advanced research environments are beginning to explore “self-driving laboratories.” These facilities combine robotics, automation, and AI to autonomously design and conduct experiments.
Smart Manufacturing and Process Automation
Industry 4.0 technologies are revolutionizing coatings production by enhancing operational efficiency, improving quality, and lowering costs. Sherwin-Williams has adopted AI-driven process automation in its manufacturing facilities to improve batch consistency, reduce energy consumption, and optimize production parameters.
PPG has invested in creating digital twin simulation platforms that mirror its production lines. By coupling these virtual replicas with IoT sensor data, PPG can monitor manufacturing operations in real time. This approach enables predictive maintenance and reduces waste and downtime while enhancing the overall quality and consistency of the company’s coatings, an approach also adopted by Kansai Paint in Japan. PPG can even offer digital twin visualizations to clients, providing transparent windows into product performance and lifecycle management.
Solutions like Datacolor’s automated color matching systems are also helping manufacturers streamline quality control and reduce formulation errors, ultimately improving throughput and customer satisfaction. In addition, companies such as Ford, ZF, and PPG are actively deploying smart factory technologies, using digital twins, predictive maintenance, and AI-powered analytics to drive performance across the production ecosystem.
Monitoring Performance and Customer Experience
Digitalization is also unlocking new value at the product level. R&D efforts continue on smart coatings with embedded sensing capabilities that provide early warnings of degradation, corrosion, or mechanical stress — enhancing safety and durability.
At the consumer interface, coatings companies are leveraging AI to elevate the user experience. For example, Sherwin-Williams’ Color Expert app uses AI-powered tools to help consumers visualize color choices and receive personalized recommendations, combining convenience with high-tech innovation.
Europe’s strong digital infrastructure, combined with stringent rules on data usage and privacy such as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), has spurred the development of digital tools tailored for customer engagement. For instance, augmented reality (AR) applications that help clients visualize paint finishes before purchase are becoming standard.
AkzoNobel has introduced AR applications that allow customers to preview colors and finishes in a virtual environment. This digital tool not only enhances the customer experience by letting them visualize outcomes before a purchase decision is made, but it also helps reduce product returns and shortens the design cycle.
Nippon Paint has deployed mobile applications and web‑based platforms that enable customers to explore product ranges, preview color schemes, and place orders digitally. By creating an interactive and accessible digital channel, Nippon Paint has improved customer engagement and streamlined the customization process to better meet local market needs.
Digital Transformation
By embracing Industry 4.0 and digital technologies, the paint and coatings industry is entering a new era of efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. From AI-enhanced R&D and lab automation to smart manufacturing and functional coatings, these advances are redefining how products are developed, produced, and experienced. Companies that lead in digital transformation are setting the benchmark for the future of coatings in an increasingly connected and data-driven world.
In our next post in this series, we’ll focus on the megatrend of sustainability, including issues such as bio-based materials, molecular recycling, and low-carbon technologies.
